Friuli-Venezia Giulia

  • Lago di Verzegnis with Monte Amarianna in the background.
  • Venzone: Small town surrounded by a double wall. Destroyed during the earthquake in 1976, but nicely rebuilt. Wander inside the walls on the tiled streets. See the Duomo which was painstakingly rebuilt with the original rubbles after the earthquake.
  • Lago the Cavazzo and Bordano: Located in the gap between two peaks that provide very favorable conditions to butterflies. Go yourself to explore the area in the early Summer, or visit the museum in the small town.
  • Gemona: Major city which was almost totally destroyed during the earthquake in 1976. Thoroughly rebuilt and beautiful Town Hall and cathedral.
  • Osoppo: Also destroyed in 1976. Travel to the top and see the collapsed church, now a memorial, and the fort with the stunning views down to River Tagliamento.
  • Lago di Cornino: A small lake at the foot of the mountains. The lake has no outlet, but the karst mountains offer a constant supply of water through small streams, including underground steams. The water is bright green and crystal clear. It maintains a constant temperature of 8-9 degrees year round. Vultures and eagles are often seen along the mountain sides.
  • San Daniele: World famous for San Daniele ham. The center is cozy with many restaurants and bars.
  • Spilimbergo: Known for its mosaic school, clearly reflected in the beautiful city.
  • Cividale: Superbly located on each side of the Natisone River. Ponte del Diavolo connects the two boroughs on each side of the divide. Lovely center with cathedral in Venetian-Gothic style. Internationally known for its Lombard temple, a UNESCO site.
  • Val Tramontina: The road to Tramonti from Ampezzo offers beautiful mountain sceneries.
  • Udine: Provincial Capital and university town. Many splendid old houses, Duomo, and streets and squares. The most beautiful is probably Pz San Giacomo close to the Venetian center in Pz della Libertà. The city is famous for the 17th century painter Giambattista Tiepolo's beautiful pictures and frescoes.
